O’Hare, a Socialist reformer, wrote the letters from the Missouri State Penitentiary, where she served a 14-month term for opposing the draft for World War I. They acknowledge gifts and letters, and discuss the Socialist movement, diseases, prison food, heat and ventilation, and mental disturbances of inmates.

In the 1980’s the name was changed to Phelps County Regional Medical Center, and in 2019 the name was changed again to Phelps Health.
