In honor of the state's 200th birthday, Our Missouri will feature a series throughout 2021 entitled "Bicentennial Book Club," which highlights influential books related to Missouri and examines how scholars, historians, and authors dissect major topics in the state's history. So, join the "Book Club" to hear about award-winning publications that detail the state's diverse history, as well as the stories behind the stories featured within their pages. This episode features a conversation with Jarod Roll about his contributions to the study of labor history, particularly through his books, Spirit of Rebellion, The Gospel of the Working Class, and Poor Man's Fortune.

About the Guest

Jarod Roll

Jarod Roll holds a PhD in history from Northwestern University. Presently, he is an associate professor of history at the University of Mississippi. He is the author of Spirit of Rebellion: Labor and Religion in the New Cotton South; The Gospel of the Working Class: Labor's Southern Prophets in New Deal America; and Poor Man's Fortune: White Working-Class Conservatism in American Metal Mining, 1850–1950.

Join Cape Girardeau Research Center Coordinator Bill Eddleman for the next installment in his genealogy series: “Crossing the Pond: Tracing Ancestors in Immigration and Naturalization Records.” Most family historians in the U. S. have ancestors who migrated from other continents. Depending on the time period of immigration and port of arrival, it can be difficult to find these ancestors and tell their immigration story. This session will summarize surviving immigration records from different time periods and where to find them.
