The State Historical Society of Missouri is celebrating Partners in Education week with students from Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School in Columbia. SHSMO’s partner in education school is one of the oldest elementary schools in Columbia and was built in 1904. Today, the school utilizes art throughout its curriculum. Over many years, students and teachers have enjoyed field trips, which often include a short walk to the SHSMO Art Gallery and the Columbia Research Center.
This week, a display of student artworks from Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary can be viewed inside the lobby and from the south windows of the SHSMO headquarters facing Elm Street. These and other displays in downtown Columbia are part of the annual Columbia Public School Partner in Education Art Gallery and Windows Downtown in The District. The theme for the 40th anniversary of Partners in Education week is Inspire Greatness.
Among the artwork at the State Historical Society this week through Wednesday, May 15, are Sun Prints, a project that blends art and science in a unique way. Students selected images from magazines to create collages, showcasing their creativity and artistic vision. By exposing these collages to the sun, the students used a natural process to create beautiful and one-of-a-kind prints.
Other artwork on display at SHSMO includes Rainy Day Portraits. The description refers to the portraits as “a colorful and cheerful art project that captures the joy of creativity even on gloomy days. Using crayons to draw umbrellas and then applying liquid watercolors for a resist effect, students created vibrant and unique artworks. Despite the rain outside, this project reminds us that creativity and happiness can brighten any day!”
