SHSMO Hosts Public Reception for World Amateur Disc Golf Champtionship

Join us for a free event this Friday, August 22, 6-9 p.m. at the Center for Missouri Studies as we welcome the 2025 PDGA World Amateur Disc Golf Championship being held in Columbia August 18-23. Disc sport is played essentially the same as traditional golf but uses a flying disk thrown to a basket or pole hole.  Competitors win by completing the course in the fewest strokes. The Midwest region has played an important role in the sport by hosting major tournaments and publishing on disc golf, ultimate, and other "Frisbee" style of play.

Since 1997, The State Historical Society of Missouri has housed the Midwest Disc Sports Collection that documents the development of disc sports nationally and internationally. It contains 40 cubic feet of material including Wham-O Inc. correspondence, newspaper clippings, books, newsletters, posters, films, and instructional material, and other publications.

Learn more about the sport and its history. Meet the competitors and check out some of the highlights in the SHSMO-held collection. There will also be vendors in the “Fly Mart,” to get in on the action while enjoying music with DJ “Kylie on Hitt.”
