New and Notable: A Selection of SHSMO Acquisitions from Recent Years presents a small portion of the hundreds of new artworks that the State Historical Society of Missouri has recently collected. As the Society celebrates its 125th birthday, this exhibition illustrates the institution’s ongoing commitment to acquire a wide variety of artworks that help to preserve the cultural heritage of the Show-Me State.

Many of these works were donated to SHSMO by artists and collectors who wanted to share these cultural treasures with future generations. The State Historical Society of Missouri is eternally grateful to these generous donors. The exhibition includes works by Thomas Hart Benton, George Caleb Bingham, Rose O’Neill (of Kewpie fame), Sid Larson, Brian Mahieu, David Plank, and many others.

Military Service/Literary Solace - A Conversation with Veteran Writers

The public is invited to hear four celebrated writers who will discuss the connection between their experiences as veterans and their creative work on April 18. Authors Brian Turner, Dewaine Farria, Jerri Bell, and Matt Gallagher will be in conversation with moderator Andrew Visscher, an MA candidate at the University of Missouri. Visscher is a literary scholar and serves as captain in the U.S. Army Advanced Civil Schooling Program.

Basic Genealogy: Crossing the Pond—Tracing Ancestors in Immigration and Naturalization Records

Join Cape Girardeau Research Center Coordinator Bill Eddleman for the next installment in his genealogy series: “Crossing the Pond: Tracing Ancestors in Immigration and Naturalization Records.” Most family historians in the U. S. have ancestors who migrated from other continents. Depending on the time period of immigration and port of arrival, it can be difficult to find these ancestors and tell their immigration story. This session will summarize surviving immigration records from different time periods and where to find them.
