  • Richard S. Brownlee Missouri Local History Grant

    The State Historical Society of Missouri honors a long-time former SHSMO Executive Director, Dr. Richard S. Brownlee, by making grants available in his name to help Missouri cultural heritage institutions preserve and provide access to local history. Brownlee Local History Grants of up to $500 are available for the preservation of historical records or the education and programming of activities. A maximum of $10,000 will be awarded each year.

    Guidelines

    Missouri Local History Grants are available in two focus areas:

    • Preservation of historical records 
      Purchase of archival supplies to store or display personal papers, photographs, maps or other materials. Funds may not be used for preservation of federal, state or local governmental documents.
    • Education or programming activities
      Development of programs or activities to promote learning about local history or training for the preservation of local history records.

    Eligibility

    Grants are available to Missouri cultural heritage institutions that are SHSMO Silver Members or higher. Preference to be given to local historical societies and length of organizational membership.  Organizations that received an award are eligible to apply again after one year.

    Application Process

    Applications should be submitted through the Online Application Form.  Application is closed until August 2024.

    Applications must contain:

    • Name of applicant institution and address
    • Name of project manager and contact information
    • Description of the project (250 to 500 words)
    • Requested amount

    Final Report

    Final Reports may be submitted using the Online Final Report Form or by emailing a short description of project outcomes and budget expenditures, copies of invoices, and images of your project to shsmocenter@shsmo.org.

    About Richard S. Brownlee

    The Brownlee Fund is a memorial to longtime SHSMO Executive Director Richard S. Brownlee, 1960-1985.  During his tenure, Richard S. Brownlee built The State Historical Society of Missouri into a major specialized research library. SHSMO's holdings of newspapers, reference materials, and manuscripts tripled in size. Brownlee expanded SHSMO's unrivaled collection of Missouri genre paintings, featuring the works of George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton; developed a contemporary art collection; expanded the editorial cartoon collection; and, widely loaned SHSMO's artworks for exhibition. He edited the Missouri Historical Review and numerous historical publications and wrote articles and essays.

    When Brownlee retired in 1985, Representative Francis "Bud" Barnes III, Society president, called him "the finest public historian the state of Missouri has ever known." SHSMO honored him with the Distinguished Service Award and Sidney Larson painted his portrait.

    Historically the Brownlee Fund was presented as grants to individuals and organizations proposing to publish or otherwise document Missouri and its citizens.  Current grants are to cultural heritage institutions to preserve local records and provide access to local history.
