This statewide virtual program, hosted by the State Historical Society of Missouri, features Dr. Traci Wilson-Kleekamp, in a combined scholarly presentation and curriculum workshop. The central focus is the historical case of Celia, examining her actions as a form of radical resistance against persistent sexual assault within the institution of enslavement. This analysis contextualizes her narrative within Missouri’s broader history of sexual violence and legal disenfranchisement. Pamela Westbrooks-Hodge, President of the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation, will also provide updates on modern justice efforts led by the Foundation. The historical analysis and modern justice efforts are followed by Dr. Wilson-Kleekamp’s articulation of evidence-based, age-appropriate pedagogical strategies. These strategies are designed to bridge historical injustice with contemporary concerns regarding exploitation and human rights.
