The Civil War Forts of Cape Girardeau

Join Bill Eddleman, coordinator of the SHSMO Cape Girardeau Research Center, for his presentation on "The Civil War Forts of Cape Girardeau" at Hanover Lutheran Church Center. The event is free and open to the public. Cape Girardeau had four Union forts during the Civil War: Forts A, B, C, and D. All were constructed in late 1861 and only Fort D survives. Bill's presentation will provide an overview of Cape Girardeau and vicinity in 1861, as well as the design, armaments, and construction of the forts, and their role in the defense of the town during the war. Bill will also talk about the eventual fate of the forts and the preservation of Fort D in Cape Girardeau.
