In 1974, concert goers flocked to Sedalia for the Ozark Music Festival held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Often called Missouri’s own Woodstock, the festival drew a crowd estimated as large as 350,000 people, comparing it to the crowd that gathered at Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York in 1969. The Ozark Music Festival featured more than thirty musicians, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, the Eagles, the Charlie Daniels Band, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and more. A Missouri State Senate report called the three-day festival a disaster. Almost 50 years later, many Missourians look back on the event with nostalgia.
Join us for this FREE documentary screening by filmmaker and former Sedalia resident Jefferson Lujin as he takes us back to the summer of 1974. SHSMO’s Kevin Walsh will moderate a Q&A following both screenings. In between, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., enjoy traditional Ozarks music influenced in bluegrass, folk, and country by Pat Kay & Ben Miller featuring Emma Burney. Food trucks will be on the SHSMO parking lot, so bring your lawn chairs for the outdoor concert in-between the film screenings inside the State Historical Society of Missouri Center for Missouri Studies.
No admission or reservation is required. Open seating inside Cook Hall for both screenings. Doors open to Cook Hall 30 minutes before the film begins. Seating is limited to 200 people per screening. A queue line before both screenings will be used for seating. Please note that the SHSMO parking will be closed to allow for the food trucks and seating during the outdoor music concert (4:30-6:30 p.m.), Metered parking on the street and a nearby public parking garage at the corner of Locust and 6th streets are available. We are hosting a family-friendly event, so please, no alcohol on the premises for the outdoor concert and film screening inside Cook Hall. In case of inclement weather, Pat Kay & Ben Miller featuring Emma Burney will perform inside Cook Hall.
