An experienced prosecuting attorney, assistant public defender, and county public administrator, H. Riley Bock was appointed to a six-year term on the Missouri State Public Defender Commission in 2014. Bock is currently chair of that commission. In addition to practicing law both as a prosecutor and in private practice, Bock also has taught at New Madrid County Central High School and has owned and run a farm. He has been active in a number of civic and nonprofit organizations, including the Higgerson School Historic Site in New Madrid. Bock is a past president of the State Historical Society of Missouri (1995–1998) and has served as a trustee since 1984.

Military Service/Literary Solace - A Conversation with Veteran Writers

The public is invited to hear four celebrated writers who will discuss the connection between their experiences as veterans and their creative work on April 18. Authors Brian Turner, Dewaine Farria, Jerri Bell, and Matt Gallagher will be in conversation with moderator Andrew Visscher, an MA candidate at the University of Missouri. Visscher is a literary scholar and serves as captain in the U.S. Army Advanced Civil Schooling Program.

Basic Genealogy: Crossing the Pond—Tracing Ancestors in Immigration and Naturalization Records

Join Cape Girardeau Research Center Coordinator Bill Eddleman for the next installment in his genealogy series: “Crossing the Pond: Tracing Ancestors in Immigration and Naturalization Records.” Most family historians in the U. S. have ancestors who migrated from other continents. Depending on the time period of immigration and port of arrival, it can be difficult to find these ancestors and tell their immigration story. This session will summarize surviving immigration records from different time periods and where to find them.
