Volunteers give thousands of hours of their time each year to SHSMO

A recent brunch at the Center for Missouri Studies honored the volunteers who have provided assistance to SHSMO staff over the past year. Over 4,000 hours – an equivalent of two full-time staff – has helped the State Historical Society of Missouri carry out its work through the efforts of volunteers. From a larger perspective, since we began tracking their hours in 2005, volunteers have contributed over 53,000 hours to SHSMO. This past year, volunteers kept the welcome desk staffed, worked on nearly all aspects of digitization, and helped with editorial, communications, Missouri History Day, art, conservation, manuscripts, newspapers, oral history, events, and more.
“Our volunteers are an invaluable part of SHSMO’s culture. Not only does their work keep us running, but their companionship, enthusiasm, and varied backgrounds help make SHSMO a real community," said Heather Richmond, senior archivist at the Columbia Research Center.

The staff and patrons of the State Historical Society of Missouri appreciate the work of our volunteers. Thank you to all our volunteers for your service to preserving and sharing Missouri’s history!
