The State Historical Society of Missouri will host the world premiere of The Trail State, a new documentary film that examines how Missouri has taken a leadership role in trail-making, bringing communities together and creating accessibility throughout the state for the public to enjoy its natural beauty. The film, conceived and executive produced by Magnificent Missouri, is directed and produced by Once Films of St. Louis.
The film screening will be held Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. with a reception at 5 p.m. at the State Historical Society of Missouri Center for Missouri Studies, 605 Elm Street in Columbia, Missouri. A conversation with the filmmakers follows the 56-minute screening. The event is free and open to the public.
The Trail State examines the power of trails to transform communities, economies, and lives. At its heart is Missouri’s 237-mile Katy Trail—once an abandoned rail line, now a thriving connection between people, places, and possibility. Its success has inspired a new generation of trails, including the Rock Island Trail to St. Louis’ Brickline Greenway. Through these stories, The Trail State explores how Missouri is leading the way in proving that trails are more than recreation—they are economic lifelines, conservation tools, and bridges to a more connected future.

The film premiere is a kickoff to a full weekend at Cooper’s Landing on the Katy Trail, 11505 Smith Hatchery Road, Columbia. Conservation Expo 2026 will be held Sept. 12 and 13. The free event includes over 30 organizations who will offer information and services on conservation stewardship. There will be live music and activities for all ages.
