As the centennial celebration of Route 66 draws closer to conclusion, a panel of experts, including SHSMO's Kathleen Seale, will discuss the future of Route 66 and how we can preserve the memories of those who built, traveled, and lived on the road. This session introduces Research Route 66, a collaboration of libraries, museums, and archives dedicated to research, preserving historical records, and making Route 66 stories and testimony accessible for generations to come. Participants will discover the stories, documents, and artifacts these institutions are collecting and learn how they can contribute to, use, and appreciate these important collections.
Kathleen Seale has been leading efforts at SHSMO to collect and preserve Route 66 history in Missouri. Other panelists include Kaisa Barthuli, director (retired), Volunteer in the Parks Program Liaison, Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program for the National Park Service; Dr. David King Dunaway, oral historian and chair of Road Ahead Research and Education Working Group for the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership; Amanda Bryden, registrar of History & Historic Sites, Illinois State Museum; and Peter Runge, head of Special Collections and Archives, Northern Arizona State University - Cline Library. The panel will be moderated by Audra Bellmore, Professor, Meem Archives of Southwestern Architecture, College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences, University of New Mexico.
