Center for Missouri Studies

Apply for a 2020 Center for Missouri Studies Fellowship

The State Historical Society of Missouri announces two Center for Missouri Studies fellowship opportunities for the calendar year beginning January 1, 2020. Each fellowship carries a stipend of $5,000 for a project that results in the completion of a scholarly essay. The project must examine an aspect of the history of Missouri or its people during the period in which the state was founded: from roughly 1817, when Missouri first petitioned for statehood, through the following twenty years in which the state’s capital city and principal governing institutions were established. Essays must be completed by the end of calendar year 2020 and must reflect significant scholarship in primary sources, evidence familiarity with appropriate secondary sources, and contain endnotes that comply with The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. The finished product will be considered for publication in a state bicentennial–themed issue of the Missouri Historical Review, although successful completion of the project is no guarantee of publication. In addition, successful applicants will have an opportunity to make a public presentation based on their project at a mutually agreed upon time and place.
