Come and celebrate with the State Historical Society of Missouri as the doors open to the Center for Missouri Studies! The date picked for the Grand Opening of the new building—August 10—was chosen to mark the anniversary of the day Missouri became a state 198 years ago in 1821. Now cities all across Missouri are preparing for the bicentennial celebrations that are fast approaching in 2021. With all of these exciting festivities happening now and in the near future, it is important to look back at earlier observances of the Show-Me State’s vibrant past. The “Celebrations” exhibit features images ranging from large, statewide commemorations such as the World’s Fair and State Fair to smaller events like regional harvest festivals, social gatherings, weddings, and graduation parties. The photographs showcase cherished traditions, community ties, shared experiences, and the rich diversity and culture of Missourians throughout the state.
