National History Day Teacher Workshop in Cape Girardeau

Did you know that the National History Day in Missouri program offers students in grades 6-12 the chance to learn history, improve research techniques, as well as public speaking, writing, and analytical skills while competing with their peers in local, state, and national contests each year? Want to learn more about this fantastic program that helps students? The Southeast Missouri State University College of Humanities & Social Sciences is hosting a History Day Workshop for Regional Teachers on Friday, October 6 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Presentations will be offered on judging, local research resources, registration, etc.

A tour of Kent Library and Special Collections will also be given to registrants. Lunch will be provided, and certificates will be awarded to attendees for potential professional development. For more information, contact historyday@semo.edu

KOPN 89.5 FM: 50 Years of Independent Community Media in Mid Missouri

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of community directed KOPN. The station’s roots began with a few hours of daily programming that barely covered Columbia's downtown to what is now an international audience with programming 24/7 on the radio and web. Most of KOPN's programming is hosted by mid-Missouri folks offering a variety of music and talk. This year, the station moved from its original downtown space to 401 Bernadette Drive, which included hauling 99 boxes of reel-to-reel tapes.

The Widest Spectrum of Sound: 60 Years of College Radio

Learn more about the history of the Missouri University of Science and Technology radio station in Rolla, which has trained students in broadcasting since 1963. Dr. Jeff Schramm, KMNR’s faculty advisor, will walk through the station's 60-year history on campus. Unlike commercial radio, KMNR's format has been a free-form radio station, offering a wide variety of music and programs for its listeners. This event is free and cosponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Missouri S&T Archives.

The Western Conservatory of Music of Rolla, Kansas City and Chicago: A Glimpse of Late 19th Century Music Education

Learn about the history of the Western Conservatory of Music, originally established in Rolla in 1882. Later, the music school would move briefly to Carthage, then Kansas City, and finally to Chicago. Dr. David Samson, Missouri S&T assistant professor of music, will cover the history of the conservatory. This event is free and cosponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri and Missouri S&T Archives.
