Join Steven Brawley, founder of the St. Louis LGBT History Project; Kerri Yost and Steph Borklund, associate professors of digital filmmaking at Stephens College; and SHSMO archivist Heather Richmond for the first of a series of virtual presentations on LGBTQ+ collections at SHSMO. Following an overview of the collections and how to navigate them, Yost and Borklund will discuss their research in SHSMO's Helen Stephens collection for their forthcoming film chronicling Stephens' life.
A Missouri farm girl and runner who won two Olympic gold medals in 1936 at the age of 18, Stephens went on to be the first woman to own and manage her own basketball team. Stephens' lesbian relationships are documented in her collection along with her sports career. Online and free, registration required.
