Carter County Manuscript Collections

Carter County, organized in 1859, was among the last counties in Missouri to be formed. The county seat is Van Buren. These collections deal in some manner with Carter County, Missouri. This list is not comprehensive, so be sure to browse Manuscript Collections by subject.

Cane Creek Baptist Association, Minutes, 1904-1992, (R0235)

These are booklets containing the proceedings of the 42nd (1904), 91st (1953) and 130th (1992) annual meetings of the Cane Creek Baptist Association. Included are the articles of faith and constitution, minutes, committee reports, and directories of churches and staff. The booklet for 1953 is a photocopy of the original. Organized in 1857, the Association includes congregations in a wide area of southeastern Missouri.

These are printed minutes of the second and thirteenth annual meetings of the Eleven Points River Baptist Association, 1890 and 1901. Founded as the Elevenpoint River Association of Missionary Baptists, the association included churches in Carter, Howell, Oregon, and Ripley counties in Missouri.

This is an unused coupon book from the general store at Midco, two miles north of Fremont in Carter County, Missouri. The business was owned by the Mid-Continent Iron Company, which operated an iron furnace and chemical plant at Midco until 1921.

The papers of Lynn Morrow contain correspondence and research papers, with an additional significant collection of late twentieth-century promotional and advertising items. The papers reflect major areas of Morrow’s research on the southwest Missouri region; Iron, Shannon, and Washington counties; Theodore Pease Russell and his writings; and the writings of Silas C. Turnbo. The collection also includes a large selection of promotional publications and ephemera associated with late 20th century tourism in Missouri and Arkansas.

These are telegrams sent and received by Col. John B. Gray, commander of the Union post at Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri. The dispatches include communications with district headquarters at St. Louis, and with detachments throughout southeastern Missouri, especially those at Fredericktown, Patterson, Van Buren, and Barnesville. The telegrams cover the period from November 1862 to April 1863.

These are papers of a conservationist and outdoor journalist, including material on the Outdoor Writers Association of America, wilderness areas, the "Irish Wilderness" of Oregon County, Missouri, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, and the Ozarks region. There are a typescript of Saults's unpublished novel and copies of many of his articles and speeches.

The Thad Snow Papers include writings, correspondence, scrapbooks, memorabilia and photographs. Snow was a prolific writer during his life. He is best remembered for his column, “Letters from the People” for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch beginning in the 1930s. The topics covered in this collection include politics, foreign affairs, farming, Snow’s family, economics and human nature.

These are corporate minutes and financial account books, and other records of the St. Louis-San Francisco ("Frisco") Railway Company (1916-1980) and predecessor, subsidiary, and constituent companies, most notably the St. Louis & San Francisco Railway (1876-1896) and the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad (1896-1916). The "Frisco" operated in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. It became part of the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1980.

This is the Civil War diary of a sergeant and, later, lieutenant of Co. D, 23rd Iowa Infantry. The diary covers duty in Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, 26 July 1862 -- ca. 15 April 1865. Included are descriptions of service in the Army of Southeastern Missouri, the Vicksburg Campaign, including the battles of Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Big Black River Bridge, and Milliken's Bend, and furlough and medical leave in Iowa.

This collection contains images from 1900 to 1963 depicting St. Louis City and County people, public buildings, riverfront scenes, bridges, churches, catastrophes, houses and parks. Trefts photographed many historic events such as the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition; the 1934 World Series; and aviation in St. Louis including the Wright brothers at Kinloch Field in 1908 and Charles Lindbergh's return from Paris in 1927. A number of images focus on Crawford and Iron Counties and the Lake of the Ozarks region in the early 1930s.
