Columbia

The State Historical Society of Missouri is the premier research center for the study of Missouri state and local history. Founded in May 1898, SHSMO collects, preserves, and publishes materials that enhance research and supports learning opportunities in the study of Missouri and the Midwest.

The Columbia center is the administrative headquarters of SHSMO providing access to a large library and manuscript collections and an art collection of the nation's best collection of Missouri regional and westward expansion art.

Through its education program, the Center for Missouri Studies, SHSMO administers National History Day in Missouri. The Center also publishes the Missouri Historical Review. The cornerstone of SHSMO's publications program since 1906, this quarterly journal offers scholarly articles on diverse topics in Missouri history. An active book publisher, SHSMO's publications have covered everything from editorial cartoons to German settlement. Copies of SHSMO publications can be purchased in the Columbia Gift Shop and online.

SHSMO collections are stored at research centers across the state. Please make requests at least one week in advance of your visit.
